Umbauten: NASCAR - Legends Of Racing
1960 Pontiac Bonneville - Jack Smith #47
Als Slot-Unterbau habe ich das Chassis eines Carrera GO Mini
Cooper genommen. Um den deutlich längeren Achsabstand anzupassen
habe ich das Chassis vor dem Motor durchgeschnitten und mit
2 zugeschnittenen Plastikstegen des original Unterbodens mittels
Sekundenkleber um 1 cm verlängert.

- Geschichte:
"NASCAR's most popular driver
in 1958, Jack Smith has 21 Grand National wins to his credit
which places him 20th on the all-time win list. He also
has over 600 victories in the "bullrings" and was voted
into the Stock Car Racing Hall of Fame in 1981. In 1959,
veteran announcer Buddy Davenport pinned the name "Red Fox'
on this '60 Pontiac, "When that Red Fox gets out in front,
those hound dogs have a hard time catching it" Jack drove
this car in such notable victories as the 1960 Firecracker
250 and the 1961 Volunteer 500 (the first race at Bristol,
Tennessee). The biggest victory of Jack's career would have
been Charlotte's inaugural World 600 in 1960: "At Charlotte,
for their first race, the track was still being paved, even
after qualifying. The new pavement was tearing up real bad,
so we added wire mesh to protect our radiators and 'mud
flaps' to keep the asphalt from being kicked up off our
tires. I led 193 of the 400 laps and was 5 laps ahead of
the second-place car when disaster struck. A large chunk
of asphalt tore a hole in my fuel tank and gasoline came
pouring out. We tried stuffing rags into the hole and even
tried Camay soap, but nothing would work. I believe if we
would have had a bar of Octagon soap (because it was larger
and softer) it would have plugged the hole and not leaked;
then I could have still won the race. I would have never
believed that a bar of soap could be worth over $25,000".
